No Deal
So September ended for Congress pretty much as it began…lots of promises about deals being worked out, and no real action on anything.
Which in a lot of people’s minds is far better than had they passed anything.
Today is the start of the new fiscal year for the U.S. government, and they–as has become custom–kicked the can down the road, approving an emergency resolution to keep the government funded for a while instead of long ago having a budget bill in place…narrowing averting a government shutdown with a few hours to spare.
No action taken on raising the debt limit, meaning we won’t have credit to pay our bills in a couple of weeks. Obviously plenty of time to do something about that, but since Democrat leadership in Congress had tied so many things like this together into one package…seeing it come apart tells us something.
Sort of like saying you are going to eat a hamburger…but then pulling off and eating the top bun…then the toppings, and at some point maybe taking a bite out of the meat itself.
Lots of in-fighting within the Democrats on the human infrastructure bill, with segments of the House caucus seemingly diametrically opposed…one side won’t budge from $3.5 trillion as a top figure, one side saying they won’t go above a number less than half that. Then there’s the Senate and its separate issues.
Typically everyone is full of bluster and they then cave. Since that’s the track record, you have to think that’s what will happen again…but somehow, this feels different, with the goal of many being to win it all or be happy walking away with nothing as opposed to compromise at any level.
Tempting to ignore it all because it seems so beneath us…then again, we elected them…well, if you can trust the vote in some states.
