Seeking To Limit Freedoms
A lawsuit was filed yesterday by a Council Bluffs woman, the mother of two children, against the governor, the state public health director, and the state education director.
At issue is Iowa’s law prohibiting schools from issuing mask mandates. Note again, the law, not simply some executive order by a power-hungry politician.
The mother claims that her children could be at risk without a mandate being in place.
I’m not about to question her parenting, and as one without children, I can’t speak to the whole parenting thing.
But the law provides that she could slap masks on her children if she wants, and if that’s not workable, there are remote options. Again, that may be simplistic.
But it makes the broader point. When was the last time a citizen sued government, asking to have their freedoms taken away? Never, because it’s completely backwards and the opposite of what free-thinking and independent people do.
Lawsuits are typically filed when government overreaches and limits our freedoms. To have a citizen, even during a pandemic, seek to have government take over such a large part of our lives is truly frightening because it shows just how far we have fallen, into wanting the nanny-state to take care of us so we can be relieved of the responsibility.
I’m fine with the individual filing the lawsuit, because she has the freedom to do that. But the idea of trying to get government to take away the freedoms we all have is one that should bring us all up short.
