Iowa Health Care
The average American spends more than $11,000 per year on personal health care; that’s according to the personal finance website Wallet Hub, which this week released its report on the best and worst states for health care.
Iowa ranks as the number 8 best overall in the country.
The rankings were compiled by reviewing factors such as health care cost, accessibility and outcome…including the average monthly insurance premium to physicians per capita. Again, Iowa is eighth best overall.
Iowa is one of the insurance capitals of the nation, so it makes sense that we are 7th best in terms of insured adults, and 9th best in the number of insured children.
We have the 11th best number of hospital beds per capita, but we’re not as good with staffing—a problem folks in rural areas in particular have dealt with repeatedly in the past. We’re in the middle—number 24 in terms of number of dentists per capita, and number 27 for physicians per capita.
Iowa is 13th best in terms of the percentage of adults who have not visited a dentist in the past year…and 17th best in percent of at-risk adults with no routine doctor visit in the past two years. So in short, we take care of regular maintenance. Reminds me that I have a couple of appointments to make.
