The Future of the GOP

A new Associated Press telephone poll of 1,308 U.S. adults conducted during the middle of this month shows that more than 80 percent of Republicans say former President Donald Trump should have at least some influence in the Republican Party today.

Nearly half of the total, 47 percent, say Trump should have a lot of influence…a third, 34 percent, say he should have a little. And obviously, the very few remaining say he should be out of the picture.

Trump’s strength was not surprisingly strongest among those who call themselves conservatives…58 percent say he should have a lot of influence going forward.

At the same time, and this is not inconsistent, only 41 percent of Republicans say they are optimistic about their party’s future…probably because 63 percent say democracy is not working well. Even more than that, 66 percent or two thirds, say Joe Biden was illegitimately elected last year.

“All evidence to the contrary,” the AP snidely noted. Guess they have been too busy to cover audits in places like Arizona or Georgia.

At the very least, this shows that Trump is unique. Usually, in recent decades, when someone loses a run for the White House, their influence within the party drops virtually completely. Jimmy Carter in 1980, George H.W. Bush in 1992.

But not Trump. It’s why Democrats, and some old guard Republicans, are worried. They thought they’d be rid of Trump when he left the White House. Apparently, not any time soon.
