Social Hour
Next week marks the beginning of KXEL’s 80th year of serving Iowa and much of the country at AM 1540…the first station in the country to go on the air with a full 50,000-watt clear channel signal, shortly after the U.S. entered World War II.
Being a radio station used to be enough, but no longer. Yes, KXEL is an AM radio station…but it’s also a brand name, tied to a variety of similar media products. And that list is growing.
We tend to call these “social media”, although it doesn’t take long to see how not-social or friendly many of the comments are on the “socials”.
It started with a couple, Twitter and Facebook. Then it quickly expanded to include You Tube and Instagram. Now that many forms of social media are being censored, many more have popped up…and we’ve claimed space on just about all of them, because none of us knows what’s going to catch on.
KXEL has been on Parler, and we still are, despite its relative clunkiness after being abruptly pulled down earlier this year. Last week, a new outlet, Gettr, went live…and we’re there. We’ve had one of our videos censored by You Tube, so we now also do Rumble. And Facebook being what it is…we’re on MeWe, too.
We did claim accounts on Gab and TikTok, but we don’t use them…we just didn’t want someone else to steal our name and spoof you.
Regardless of the platform, we’re “@kxel1540” – on Twitter and Gettr, Facebook and MeWe, You Tube and Rumble, and Parler and Instagram. Join us on any, all, or none…whatever you’re comfortable with.
Oh, and kxel.com, and the free KXEL mobile app for both Apple and Android.
I think that’s it. Oh, and yes…on AM 1540.
