The Official End of the Era
Even though Rush Limbaugh left this earth four months ago, we’ve still heard his wit and wisdom each weekday, thanks to guide hosts and the “Best of Rush Limbaugh” programs the Premiere Network has provided us.
But today, for the first time in more than three decades, that oh-so-familiar theme song won’t be heard. His voice on the radio will be silent. The end of the Rush show is truly the end of an era.
The network is putting another show on, one that they say is “inspired by Rush”…as I’ve mentioned before, they won’t allow us to air that show, since we’d be competing with two stations they own in Cedar Rapids and Des Moines…and that’s fine, it gives us a chance to bring back the Glenn Beck program, which many of you enjoyed when it was on KXEL before.
I’ve been intrigued by the promotional hook, “inspired by Rush”, however…because anyone who talks on the radio these days is inspired by Rush in one way or another.
He invented national political talk radio. The success of his show saved AM radio, quite literally. Anyone on the air now or in the future…no matter how different they try to be…will be inspired by, and compared to, Rush.
As noted, we’ve all shared this sense of loss for months, and knew the first day without his presence on the air in any way was coming. But it’s still going to be like the first holiday with an empty chair at the table.
The voice and daily presence may be gone, but the inspiration and lessons taught will live on in all of us.
