Among the Best

Statistics show that some 15 million people moved last year…many influenced by COVID-19, either to get away from a state with rules that were unduly strict, or more positively, to find a place that better suited them overall.

With that in mind, the personal finance website WalletHub released a report yesterday on the best states to live in…and Iowa was 9th best overall in the country.

Iowa was tops in the nation in terms of affordable housing costs…and the number one state that recovered from COVID-19 the quickest.

We’re fifth best in the nation in having a low percentage of adults that are in fair or poor health.. We ranked sixth nationally in highest percentage of population that is insured.

Our home ownership rate is seventh best in the country…probably related to the cheapest housing costs statistic.

We’re 18th best in terms of low percentage of population in poverty. We’re in the middle–26th best–in the number of restaurants per capita…and 28th best in the average number of hours worked each week. Given Iowa’s well-known work ethic, I’m not surprised that more states than not work fewer hours than we do.

Barely beating out Iowa for 8th is New Hampshire…Iowa and New Hampshire seem to be linked a lot.
