Questionable Public Practice
Earlier this week, it was announced that former President Donald Trump would be speaking to the North Carolina Republican Party’s state convention on June 5th…not a huge surprise, since his daughter-in-law Lara is from the state and is considering a U.S. Senate run from there.
Late that same day came a news release from the New York state attorney general, indicating that in cooperation with the Manhattan District Attorney, she was opening a criminal investigation into the Trump Organization, expanding from the prior civil investigation.
Because where Trump and his opponents are concerned, there are no coincidences…this news struck me as more than a little odd.
First of all, of course, is the timing. Just as Trump is about to climb back into the arena comes a renewed threat of criminal prosecutions against him or his family. That’s not subtle.
But second, when was the last time you heard of a prosecutor announcing that a criminal investigation is taking place? Pretty rare, because usually it’s the opposite…prosecutors claim they cannot comment on pending investigations and don’t typically indicate who or what is being investigated.
So how much of this is real, and how much is show?
I don’t know anything about this particular investigation, and have no idea of the former president or his businesses engaged in any criminal or civil wrongdoing, for that matter. But I do know he and his family have been investigated time and again on all manner of things, with nothing actually sticking.
His opponents would say, “well, not yet”. Perhaps. But given all the effort so far by the left, don’t you think they’d have come up with something by now?
