Election Checkup
Every 5,000 miles or so, I take my car in for servicing. It’s not that there’s anything wrong with it…just that every so often there needs to be a review of how it’s working with suggestions about things that might be tweaked so it runs more smoothly…new windshield wiper blades, rotating the tires, and so on.
I was reminded of that when I heard the cries of those on the left about voting changes in Florida that were signed into law by that state’s governor Thursday. We heard similar things here in Iowa this spring, as well.
Once those on the left get past the inaccurate and mindless talking point of calling any change “voter suppression”, they try to criticize red states by saying in essence, “You folks said your elections were clean and fair, so why change the rules? What are you hiding?”
That’s a straw man argument, or whatever we are allowed to call it these politically correct days. There’s nothing to suggest that Iowa’s and Florida’s elections were anything but fair and in accordance with state laws. But that also doesn’t mean a state should not constantly try to improve on its systems, proactively making sure there are no problems in the future.
Obviously, the changes were spurred on by atrocities and likely fraud in other states…but there’s not only nothing wrong with seeing what’s going on elsewhere and working to make sure it doesn’t happen in your home state, it’s what we used to call “leadership”.
My car is running just fine, but I’m still going to take it in next week. These states with election systems that are running just fine, but they took a look under the hood anyway, should be praised…not criticized without benefit of facts.
