We’re Tired of This
I have had more conversations with people this week alone, who to a person say they are tired of all the political fighting going on these days. These are regular, average, intelligent people who have an interest in government and politics because they know how important it is in our daily lives.
But even those who have partisan leanings say they are tired of the way both parties are rushing to the extreme ends of the spectrum…and it’s starting to cause many of them to tune out.
And that’s just what those in power…in both parties…want.
Instead of having to compete for the vote of independent or non-partisan voters, they’d rather actually have fewer people show up…so long as they are die-hards sympathetic to their cause. And that feeds upon itself, making the situation worse. Parties become more polarized, so fewer moderates stay involved…so by definition those in the system are even more polarized, so by definition even fewer moderates stay involved.
The prescription is simple…stay informed, stay involved. Of course, it’s tiring. Of course, it seems like nothing more than political hacks regurgitating predictable talking points.
But this is no time to stay on the sidelines. At the very least, make your voice heard to your representatives…they need to know how you think. And if you let them know and they ignore you…then you need to let them know at the ballot box.
There needs to be more…but that’s where we all start. Stay connected and speak up…don’t give up. Too much is at stake.
