Take Your Shot…Or Not

You’ve heard commercials here on the radio tell you that you should get a COVID-19 shot as soon as possible. And you’ve heard interviews with folks who similarly think you should get the vaccination and really can’t understand why anyone wouldn’t.

As a radio station, it’s not our place to take a position on health issues like that, and we won’t. Those commercials are actually paid for by the state and federal governments, advocating their official position. And we like to have a variety of voices heard in interviews, so you can assess all information and make informed choices.

I’m personally not going to tell you that you should or should not get a shot. That’s up to you. I have never gotten a flu shot, and I’m not inclined to get this one…that’s not an anti-vaxer view, it’s simply that I don’t have contact with people in groups that are more at risk. Again, that’s a personal and family decision.

What I’m not a fan of is this continued sense of patriotic duty surrounding such things. I’ve noted this about the federal mask push before. Now the State of Iowa Department of Public Health is posting on social media urging vaccination, saying “do it for you…for your family…for Iowa”.

I’m not speaking specifically about anyone here in Iowa, but there are too many folks in government who are too eager to get citizens to bend to their will…masks, shots, vaccine passports. My fear is that it’s the foundation for something more sinister later, using what we allow now as precedent.

So as with all things…caution. Get the shot, don’t get the shot…but be alert and make an informed choice.
