A jury has convicted an Iowa man of attempted murder of a police officer and other counts in connection with a violent home-invasion robbery in 2018 that led to the fatal shooting of another suspect by police. 35-year-old Michael Bibby was found guilty yesterday of trying to kill former police chief Tom McAndrew, as well as assault, robbery, burglary and willful injury causing serious injury. An accomplice, 26-year-old Dalton Cook, was acquitted of attempted murder, but convicted of other counts. Police say the Ottumwa men were among three men who broke into an Ottumwa home on Aug. 3, 2018, shot and injured a man in front of the home and later engaged police in a shootout that killed alleged accomplice David Roy White of Fairfield.

The parents of a 5-month-old baby who died in July in northwestern Iowa are among three people now charged in the infant’s death. 20-year-old Lawrence Ruotolo and 21-year-old Brittanee Baker, both of Sheldon, have been charged with child endangerment causing bodily injury in connection with the July 31st death of their daughter. Authorities say 49-year-old Stacie Hurlburt of Sheldon has been charged with a misdemeanor count of accessory after the fact. O’Brien County prosecutors say the baby was killed while in Ruotolo’s care and that he and the two women made up a story that the child had been injured by a lamp knocked over by cats.

A Davenport man charged with killing his mother in February has entered a plea of not guilty to first-degree murder and other counts in the case. 53-year-old Andrew Rupp was arrested after police were called to the PR Masonry Apartments in Davenport on Feb. 16 to check on the welfare of a person. Officers found the body of 77-year-old Dianna Rupp inside one of the units. Police have not said how she died. Rupp was initially charged with interference with official acts and drug possession. He was later charged with first-degree murder.

Police say a person has been fatally shot in Mason City and an arrest warrant has been issued charging a man with murder in the case. The Mason City Police Department said today the shooting happened late Wednesday night. Officers called to the scene found a person suffering from gunshot wounds. The victim died at an area hospital, and police have not released the victim’s name, age or gender. But police do say a warrant has been issued for 38-year-old Benjamin Gonzalez of Mason City, charging him with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting.

A 32-year-old motorcyclist is dead following a collision last night south of Bondurant. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office says it happened around 8:40 p.m. in the 6300 block of NE Hubbell Avenue. The motorcycle was traveling southbound when it rear-ended a box truck. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck was not injured. Investigation into the collision continues.

The Cedar Falls police department is partnering with the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division to conduct alcohol compliance checks at all businesses holding liquor license in Cedar Falls…that word released yesterday. Under the supervision of law enforcement, underage persons will attempt to purchase alcoholic beverages at businesses in Cedar Falls, including convenience stores, restaurants, bars and any establishment with a liquor license. The goal is to ensure those establishments are complying with Iowa law. The criminal penalty for selling alcohol to an underage person is a fine of $500 for the employee and civil penalties against the license holder.

The City of Waterloo’s compost facility at 2745 Independence Avenue opened for the summer season yesterday…it’s open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week, including holidays. Meanwhile, yard waste curbside service will begin on Monday. Yard waste in the city of Waterloo will be collected on the same day as regular trash service.
