The Iowa Department of Revenue has extended the filing and payment deadline for 2020 individual income tax returns and first quarter 2021 estimated individual income tax payments from the April 30, 2021 statutory deadline by a month, to June 1, 2021.  Director of Revenue Kraig Paulsen said the state’s economy is showing good strength and the filing extension is an appropriate step to help Iowans whose lives have been disrupted by the pandemic.  The Order does not include business filers and other tax types for individuals. The extension is similar to one put in place by the federal government.  Because Iowa is a state that automatically conforms with the Internal Revenue Code, certain unemployment compensation will not be included in Iowa income. Based on the federal legislation, the first $10,200 of unemployment compensation income is excluded from taxation for qualifying taxpayers.

Des Moines Public Schools will join several other districts in forming a new athletic conference. School officials announced Monday that East, Hoover, Lincoln, North and Roosevelt will be competing in a new athletic conference starting in the 2022-23 school year. The Des Moines metro schools will be joining Fort Dodge, Marshalltown, Mason City and Ottumwa in leaving the Central Iowa Metropolitan League. Ames school officials are still considering the plan. The districts plan to form their own high school sports conference because they feel that suburban schools hold an unfair advantage in sports.
