Happy Ag Day
Today is the 48th anniversary of National Agriculture Day…I know, it seems everyentites has a day of its own, and most of them are eminently forgettable. But obviously, this is different.
The theme for this year’s national ag day is “Food Brings Everyone To The Table”. And the impact of Iowa’s agriculture industry on every aspect of the state is evident.
Let’s start with the fact that Iowa is the number one producer of pork, corn, eggs, ethanol and biodiesel in the country. Take any one of those away, and you have a massive revenue gap in the state’s economy.
You probably know that I have lived in Iowa my entire life, and am proud of everything we have here. I don’t know much about agriculture, but I do know I could never be a farmer…too much stress, too much uncertainty. It’s a way of life I deeply respect and appreciate, however.
The idea of National Ag Day is to help those who only think food comes from the grocery store to understand how our food and fiber products are produced…appreciate the role agriculture plays in providing safe, abundant and affordable products…value the essential role of ag in maintaining a strong economy…and acknowledge and consider career opportunities in the agriculture, food and fiber industry.
That’s the news release language. To me, it’s much simpler. Thank a farmer or a farm family today. Because quite literally, your next meal depends on them.
