One person was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries following a Sunday morning shooting in Waterloo. Authorities were called to the area of West Seventh and Randolph Streets shortly after 7 a.m. A man there with a single gunshot wound was taken to MercyOne Medical Center for treatment. 

Police are investigating a deadly collision along I-380 in downtown Cedar Rapids. It happened around 2 o’clock early Sunday morning when officers discovered the collision in the northbound lanes of I-380 near the 7th Street NE exit. A truck collided with an SUV. One of the passengers in the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other two were taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the truck was also injured and taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Investigators are still working to determine what led to the accident.

The driver of a stolen car was sent to the hospital after crashing into another vehicle while being chased by Cedar Rapids Police. Authorities say officers spotted a stolen car just before 6 p.m. Saturday in the 900 block of 1st Avenue NW. The driver of the stolen car refused to stop, leading officers in a pursuit. The suspect struck another car at Edgewood Road and 16th Ave SW, continued driving, and then left the roadway at Wiley and 16th Ave SW. The suspect was taken by ambulance to a hospital. The driver of the car hit by the suspect was treated at the scene but did not go to the hospital.

The University of Iowa Police Department is warning dormitory residents to be vigilant after reports of recent burglaries. They say they are investigating burglaries at three different residence halls between February 16th and March 1st. Authorities are strongly encouraging all residence hall occupants and those in the campus community to lock their doors at all times, even if they are only leaving for a short time.

The Marion school board will again be discussing a school mascot at its meeting today…two weeks ago, the board approved changing the team name from Indians to Mavericks. Now, they’ve learned that the phrase “maverick” is tied to Samuel Maverick, an 1800s-era Texas rancher and slave owner. Administrators say they’ll recommend the board rescind the vote to call the school’s teams “Mavericks” and look for a new name to replace “Indians”.

Sports betting is officially a billion-dollar business in Iowa, and the surge of wagers being placed outside of casinos and sportsbooks is driving it. The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission says $143.6 million was bet on sports in the state in February, the third straight month with wagers hitting nine figures. The month’s total is just shy of January’s record of $149.5 million. About 87 percent of the money bet in February came online. The start of the year marked the relaxing of betting regulations in the state, with in-person registration at casinos no longer being required.

Cedar Rapids Police are investigating a stabbing that happened just before 8 o’clock Saturday morning in the 1100 block of Sioux Drive NW. First responders found a 43-year-old man who was injured; he told police he got into a fight with a 36-year-old man. That man later arrived at a hospital; he had driven there himself with a stab wound. Investigators have determined there was an argument before the man was stabbed. The man who drove himself to the hospital is undergoing treatment and his condition is not known. Authorities have not said when or what type of charges may be filed.

A 16-year-old boy has died of a gunshot wound in Des Moines and police have arrested an 18-year-old for involuntary manslaughter. Elijah Brown-Townsend died at a hospital from his wounds. Police say he was shot while sitting in a car in the parking lot of a convenience store around 4:45 early Saturday morning. Thomas Ivy was handing a gun to Brown-Townsend when the weapon accidentally discharged. In addition to involuntary manslaughter, Ivy has been charged with carrying weapons as a second handgun was found during the investigation.
