Who’s Really the Neanderthal?

According to the first web page I found on this topic, so it must be right, Neanderthals are different from humans, or homo sapiens, in that Neanderthals were hunter-gatherers, while homo sapiens are more settled, producing food through agriculture and domestication.

This came up yesterday, of course, when the current President resorted to name-calling because two more governors–of Texas and Mississippi–removed governmental mask mandates. The man who gave the word “malarkey” another chance at popularity at this time last year said, “the last thing we need is Neanderthal thinking”.

No, respectfully, the last thing we need is more government mandates restricting how people live their lives. Masks have limited if any value other than as a fashion statement. I’m fine if you want to wear one. If your business wants to require it, fine. It’s then my choice if I patronize your business or not.

But given the inconsistency of federal officials on this, and the very uneven science about it…it’s sort of like the necktie I wear every day to work. A nice looking accessory, but not much more.

When Iowa’s governor removed our mask mandate, the president’s Chief of State criticized her on Twitter, saying it was not too much to ask for another 100 days of mask-wearing…their new idea when they took office. Actually, chief, it *is* too much to ask, since it’s not just your 100 days…it’s the other 300 days, along with your team’s new view that it really will be another 300 days or more.

For a group of folks who pledged unity, they seem to resort to name-calling a lot. So good for the Mississippi governor, who in response to this noted that this president has been around a while and probably knows Neanderthal thinking from personal experience.

Yes, Neanderthals became extinct. But we may be becoming extinct ourselves in terms of spirit, if we allow government mandates to control our lives.
