The Greatest of All Time
We all knew the day would come…and yet, it hit us like a thunderbolt yesterday–the news that Rush Limbaugh had passed away.
Regardless of politics, there are a few facts…Limbaugh single-handedly saved the radio station you’re listening to right now. That’s because AM radio didn’t know what to do in the 1980s, since so many were listening to music on FM because it sounded better. This station was playing country music.
Then came a talk show host who not only wasn’t afraid to take a stand, but did so with a sense of humor and production style we had simply not heard before. For more than three decades, he brought that to the airwaves every day. Think it’s easy to have that quality of content for 15 hours a week, for more than 33 years? Come try it sometime…I promise you, it’s not.
So obviously, the voice is silent…but not the movement. As Rush said on one of his programs a couple months ago, all his time will have been a waste if his listeners were not able to carry on even after he was gone. And that, of course, is our task.
I think this news hits so many especially hard, because we feel so much slipping away…given the direction of the country after the last election. This is just one more devastating blow.
And it is…but if Rush meant anything to you…after a proper period of mourning, it’s time to take the knowledge, the lessons, and stand on our own. This is no time to give up. Rush never did…whether it was a health challenge, or attacks from opponents.
Rest well, Rush. Now it’s up to us to show how much impact you really had.
