See You At The Game
The announcement came without fanfare or notice yesterday…but you can go to a high school basketball game if you want this weekend, or any other sporting event in Iowa.
Gov. Kim Reynolds issued an update to the public health emergency proclamations, most recently issued in mid-December. The limitations we have on our public lives…whether in restaurants, health clubs, malls, wherever…continue for another month.
But the restriction on the number of fans who can attend sporting events is lifted. Limitations such as only two fans per player for a high school game are removed, although social distancing and wearing of masks continue.
This comes at the same time as the state education department has denied waivers to the Des Moines and Iowa City districts, which were seeking to have 100 percent online learning because the positivity rates are relatively low compared with the standards set forth for closing.
Obviously, local districts and colleges and universities can set their own rules for attendance. And that’s really the point…use your best judgment and let local authorities have some say, but not all encompassing statewide rules that are too simplistic and not tailored to fit appropriately.
Does it mean that I’m going to put on fan gear and rush out to see a game tonight? No, but I wouldn’t have anyway. But the positive part is that I could. And now families don’t have to choose which members get to see someone participate in a dance team competition, a basketball game, or a concert. I think we as citizens are smart enough to handle that responsibility.
