Be Careful What You Wish For

Today is the day for U.S. Senate runoff elections in Georgia. The outcome, of course, determines the majority in the Senate.

Despite what he’s said in public, despite being on the ground campaigning there, there are some analysts suggesting that Joe Biden would just as soon have the Republicans maintain majority control of the chamber.

Because if Democrats take control of the Senate…they’ll have both chambers in Congress, and the White House…and the expectations will be unbelievably high to fundamentally change aspects of our society that we have held dear for centuries. And he really doesn’t want that.

Sure, he said various things over time suggesting he was “all in” on packing the Supreme Court, putting the Green New Deal in place, cancelling college debt, and all manner of other things. But that was just to get elected, and in fact, he couldn’t hold consistently on those changed positions even then.

If Biden indeed does become president in two weeks, it’ll be time for him to pay the piper. You’ve already seen it, with groups presenting him with their list of demands, in exchange for the support they provided during the election…and with groups saying his selection of cabinet nominees has not gone far enough in terms of gender, ethnicity, far left political views, etc.

Biden has wanted to be president for the better part of four decades, and was not about to miss getting a final chance…so he said about anything he had to. He’s not all that eager to actually do many of these things…and having a Republican majority in the Senate, even a weak one with frequent defections, serves his purpose much better—he won’t have to be held accountable because he’ll have someone to blame for his inaction.
