A man who shot and killed his adult son on Christmas Day in rural Waterloo did so in self-defense, according to sheriff’s deputies. That man himself died Monday from cardiac arrest. You may recall we told you that Black Hawk County deputies and paramedics were called to the home on East Airline Highway around 4:30 p.m. Friday on a report of an argument and shooting. The father, 69-year-old David Buck, had been in an argument with 43-year-old Chad Buck, the son who had been living at the house. Authorities say Chad Buck threatened to kill his father, and David Buck them shot him with a handgun. Both David Buck and his wife asserted he acted in self-defense in his own home. Then on Monday afternoon, medics and deputies were called back to the home after David Buck suffered cardiac arrest. He was taken to a hospital where he later died.
A candle left burning in a bedroom late yesterday afternoon caused significant damage to a portion of a Cedar Falls home. Fire and police public safety officers responded around 5:15 p.m. to the home in the 2300 block of Valley High Drive. The homeowners were present when the fire was discovered, but everyone was able to safely leave. The fire was put out within a half-hour, but there was significant smoke damage along with the structural damage.
We told you yesterday that the UNI women’s basketball conference season was going to be postponed. Late yesterday we learned that games would be played in the McLeod Center…but against a different opponent. The original pair of games against Missouri State was postponed due to COVID in the Bears program. Games between Illinois State and Valparaiso were also cancelled due to COVID at Valpo. So the Missouri Valley Conference decided to have Illinois State travel to Cedar Falls. They were scheduled to face each other later this month…but no time like the present in this unique season. You can hear the Friday game with pregame at 1:45 p.m. exclusively here on News/Talk 1540 KXEL.
The Iowa Department of Public Health says yesterday’s winter storm may impact COVID-19 testing, sample transport and processing. Sample transport from testing locations to the State Hygienic Lab has been canceled in some areas of the state where travel is not advised due to the weather conditions. The IDPH says this includes samples from Test Iowa locations and other testing providers which process tests at the lab. The department says anyone who is tested should still receive their results within 72 hours of being tested if no further delays occur. Test Iowa sites in Waterloo, Cedar Rapids and Davenport closed early yesterday due to the weather which dropped close to a foot of snow throughout large areas of central and eastern Iowa.
Crews have started vaccinating people in Iowa’s nursing homes, bringing hope…although it could take weeks to complete the vaccination drive. The government has contracts with three pharmacy companies to vaccinate nursing home residents and staff. Those began Monday. Iowa Health Care Association CEO Brent Willett says Iowa has about 31,000 residents and 37,000 staff members…in 445 nursing homes and 258 assisted living facilities. He says vaccinations are the most significant development for nursing facility residents who have been largely isolated from their families during the pandemic.
A plot to help a Black Hawk County Jail inmate escape broke down when sheriff’s deputies heard plans over the jail’s recorded phone system. 28-year-old Tyrone Copeland has been held at the jail since Dec. 12 on a $1,000 bond for a misdemeanor criminal mischief charge. He is also awaiting an extradition hearing to Ohio on other charges. Copeland’s girlfriend, 23-year-old Donsque Rashawn Donston, was discussing a plan over the phone for Copeland to escape from custody during a hospital visit. Sheriff’s officials say Donston arrived at UnityPoint-Health Allen Hospital around the time Copeland was supposed to show up for a doctor’s appointment yesterday; instead of meeting him there, she was detained on charges of conspiracy to commit a felony, and her bond was set at $25,000.
