Mask Up
Joe Biden yesterday, in an interview, said that should he be sworn in as president on January 20th, he will ask Americans to “mask up” for 100 days.
Not forever, he said, just 100 days. Pardon us if we’re a bit suspicious about all this.
First of all, there is plenty of data to suggest that masks even worn dutifully don’t stop the virus. In fact, as I have said before, they tend to give people an improper sense of security.
Wearing a mask is not a cloak of invincibility, but people act like it and don’t pay attention to what they’re doing.
Plus, remember how we were told that we had to modify our behavior for 15 days to stop the spread? That 15 days expired long ago, and Biden saying that everyone should wear a mask until May 1st of next year suggests they don’t think there will be any end in sight to this any time soon.
The symbolism of this is even more striking, because we already have virtually everyone wearing masks as it is. I seriously doubt the remaining five to seven percent of Americans who refuse to wear masks are going to be swayed by a new president saying we should all pitch in and wear masks, as if it were some new idea that will revolutionize treatment and prevention.
The way the former vice president was lobbying for it in that interview yesterday, it almost seems like he believes the mask suggestion is the answer to the problem. I hope his analysis of the situation is deeper than that, for all our sake.News/Talk 1540 KXEL · Iowa Politics — Fri. Dec. 04, 2020
