Depth of Voting
We’ve talked before about how important the vice presidential running mates are in this election. Let’s re-examine that, with some interesting possibilities.
Presume Donald Trump is re-elected, but Democrats wind up with majority control of both the House and Senate. Expect the president to not only be impeached, but removed from office, by Independence Day. I’m not saying it would be warranted or anything beyond a blatant politically motivated hit job, but they’ll do it. That means you’ll have President Mike Pence.
Look at an opposite scenario. Joe Biden is elected, but is too ill to serve a full term…or is forced out by fellow Democrats under their proposed bill to trigger the 25th Amendment to give the new president, Kamala Harris, a head start on the 2024 campaign.
It’s not far fetched at all to presume we might have President Pence, or President Harris, before the end of the next presidential term. So phrased that way…who’s got your vote? It’s not just the person at the top of the ticket, with some consideration given to the #2 person…it’s truly voting for a president, and a president-in-waiting.
While the math is not in Republicans’ favor to retake the House, it’s entirely possible they keep the White House but lose the Senate. And while Democrats may get the White House, a GOP-majority Senate would block their efforts at court packing, among other things. So many scenarios will play out, depending on the results of tomorrow’s election.
That’s why so many are urging voting for the team this year…which again does take more effort than in the past, since Iowans can no longer vote a straight party ticket, something I do support.
It requires some thought to be given to a choice…and this year, at the top of the ticket with so much at stake, even deeper thought than often is the case.
