The Lack of Civility
Lest you think the violence being perpetrated in our country’s major cities is something we in Iowa’s rural areas don’t have to worry about…guess again.
Last Thursday morning, a farmer in southern Nebraska’s Clay County got a call as he was getting his children ready for school. It was from the volunteer fire department, telling him that his farm machinery was on fire. It was in a field, midway through the harvest…a combine, two trucks and trailers filled with grain, a tractor and a grain cart. It was in a remote area, the middle of a field two miles from the nearest two-lane highway.
Investigators say the fires were deliberately set…and they wonder if the two Trump for President flags on the combine was a factor.
Then came word from Story County, here in Iowa…specifically, the city of Nevada. A pickup had its driver’s side window shot out while it was parked at the corner of First Street and the Lincoln Highway.
Could be a random occurrence…although investigators believe the large Trump 2020 sign posted in the truck’s box may have something to do with it.
I can’t help but think that the cowards who engaged in such violence were emboldened by the fact that America’s cities were looted and burned this summer, seemingly with no repercussions for those involved. They figure nothing will happen to them, either.
The truly sad part is…they’re probably right.
