The Story

All the books I’ve written are non-fiction…basically reporting on things that happened, and telling real-life stories. I’ve had people at one time or another suggest I try writing fiction, but I never can come up with a story.

And certainly not a story that is more interesting, or that has more plot twists, than real life in 2020.

Let’s just take the last week alone. The president officially nominates a candidate for the Supreme Court. There’s the most out-of-control presidential debate in recent times, followed by calls to change the system to avoid a repeat occurrence. Congress passes a bill to keep the government open for another two months, and the President signs it minutes before the clock literally struck midnight and the government would have closed. The Democrat candidate, who has spent months sequestered at home, finally does some travelling. And now both the President and First Lady have tested positive for COVID-19, barely a month before the election.

No author in his or her right mind would have concocted such a scenario. A publisher would have deemed it too fanciful.

Many of us went to bed last night hearing that one of the president’s close advisers had tested positive…and woke up to the news of the leader of the free world also testing positive. That has obvious impact on governing, not to mention campaigning, debates…the whole thing.

I’m not normally a New Year’s Eve guy…but I will be this time. Anything to celebrate 2020 coming to a close.
