A Taxing Matter
Who didn’t see this coming…investigators who ran for office as Democrats clamored to get President Trump’s tax returns, and what do you know, they were leaked to the New York Times…which decided to publish them 48 hours before the first presidential debate. Clearly a series of coincidences.
Will any investigation be done regarding who criminally leaked this information? Likely not. If you or I had done it, however…different story.
And as near as I can tell, the returns show absolutely nothing of importance. I have said consistently that the issue of his personal tax returns was simply a straw man, that they would not show who paid him or who he paid…so those claiming he was in some foreign government’s back pocket would learn nothing from the returns.
We did learn that when he shows a loss…that is, has no net income…he pays no taxes. Despite the breathless breaking news sounders on cable TV, if you don’t have income, you don’t pay taxes. It’s true is your name is Trump, or Smith.
Understand that those who have money and resources often don’t show much on their personal income tax return. The company pays for things in many cases, and the individual may be compensated with stock or other matters that again don’t show up on an individual income tax return. There are teams of lawyers who specialize in keeping declared personal income low, all well within the laws that Congress established for such things.
The lack of any real story surrounding the taxes makes those who were eager to get them foam at the mouth even more, this time in frustration and anger. Me, I’m just jealous…I’d love to reduce my tax obligation.
It’s not patriotic in some weird way to give the government money you don’t have to, when the government itself set the rules for things like taxes. And it won’t be a factor among Trump supporters, or those few voters who are still undecided.
