More Money
I hate to be the one to bring you this news, but today is September 3rd, and the federal government runs out of money and faces a shutdown at the end of the day on September 30th…that’s only 27 days.
The federal fiscal year begins on October 1st, and sadly over the past decade or more, we’ve gotten used to Congress passing temporary bills and kicking the can of the actual federal budget down the road. Sometimes, that leads to lines in the sand being drawn and the government shutting down. And given how far apart Republicans and Democrats are on coronavirus relief, there’s no indication they’ll actually get enough done to keep the government open.
It’s a game of chicken that can’t possibly end well. Truly, the government could simply shut down a month before a general election…and obviously, not just any general election, one with the president, all of the U.S. House, and a third of the U.S. Senate on the ballot.
Each side would blame the other’s lack of leadership, each side would posture and preen, and voters would be left looking for a third choice…anything but the two major parties that led us off the cliff.
And even if they do a temporary spending bill to get past the election, it’s going to come at the last minute and be the prototype of bad legislation.
Again, I’m just the messenger. But that’s what we have to look forward to as part of the 61 days left before election day. Maybe we do need this upcoming long weekend more than usual.News/Talk 1540 KXEL · Iowa Politics — Thu. Sep. 03, 2020
