Close and Getting Closer

It will be up to historians 50 years from now to say for certain…but history may indeed show that the Hillary Clinton 2016 campaign was worse than we thought in real time.

Witness current polling, for what it’s worth, not only across the country but this week, from Monmouth here in Iowa.

In so-called swing counties, those counties where the winner in 2016 won by less than 10 percent, Joe Biden is doing far better this time than Hillary Clinton did last time. And that in a nutshell is why a close election last time is perhaps closer this time.

And that is taking into account all the issues surrounding the Biden effort, with yet another video interview gone bad yesterday, with the former vice president hardly at his best when asked if he had taken a cognitive test.

So if the uneven-at-best Biden campaign is doing better than the Clinton effort among the Democrat base…that’s what leads me to suggest that ultimately, we’ll judge that effort not for failing to campaign in a few key states, which is true…but for an even deeper failure to connect with voters than we first thought.

This is not to discount the impact of a four-year Trump record that could be playing a role…but I’d love to see how the next generation views what happened just four years ago.News/Talk 1540 KXEL · Iowa Politics — Thu. Aug. 06, 2020
