And The Winner Is…
Some are making a fuss over the fact that Joe Biden has not named his running mate yet. It’s a false issue.
The big problem is that the candidate and others in the campaign had indicated that it would probably be by August 1st, which of course has come and gone…then it was early in August…then it was closer to the convention. By sliding the time frame, it makes it look like they can’t make up their minds. Possible.
Also possible that there is not a lot of interest after all by some under consideration. That’s the theory those on the right would have you believe, that Democrats know their candidate is going down to a landslide defeat, and anyone with any hope of a national political future won’t want the stain of being on a losing ticket. Remember how Hillary Clinton’s running mate’s stock has soared since the 2016 election. I’ll wait while you try to remember who that was.
But I’m not sure that’s it either. Frankly, I long for the days when you didn’t know who the running mate was going to be until the convention had started. Those things had become so predictable, they were just pale imitations of what they used to be, and very few will miss the fake spectacle that won’t be held due to COVID-19.
It only makes sense to wait until the last minute, because who knows what outside factors will come up between now and then. After all, did anyone anticipate riots in the streets and a focus on race relations, prior to late May? Did anyone anticipate a cratered economy and a U.S. population warned to not come within six feet of one another, prior to early March?
So what if Biden hasn’t made his choice, or hasn’t told us his choice. Leave a little mystery for the nomination process. There’s enough of substance to mull over, without wasting time on who asked who to prom.
