General Nastiness

This is one of these pretty self-evident things, but it appears the 2020 general election is going to be nasty. Again, not earth-shattering news, but it appears that it’s going to be nasty at every level, not just in the race for president.

And if you think you have seen money being poured into Iowa from out of state before, as the saying goes, you ain’t seen nothing yet.

Theresa Greenfield won the Democrat nomination for U.S. Senate in a five-person race one week ago today. She early on was the favorite of outside national interests, who, early on, kept her campaign flush with cash.

The fact that they are running a heavy order of television ads now shows not only that her support nationally remain strong, but that Iowa is going to be one of the key battlegrounds as Democrats try to take control of the U.S. Senate.

Republicans have vowed not to let that happen, and they have already pledged a sizable war chest of Super PAC money to support Joni Ernst’s re-election effort. News releases are flying on a daily basis from each campaign, and it’s only a week after the primary, five months before the general election.

And with half of Iowa’s congressional districts now with no incumbent on the ballot, you can expect every race to be pointed, personal, and perhaps off-putting, particularly for those of us who are independents.

Again, this is not a new discovery, just a friendly warning about what’s to come.
