We’ve been talking this week about the nomination process Democrats will use to select a presidential nominee. How’s this for a possible scenario.
The party will eliminate its in-person convention in Milwaukee scheduled for mid-August, and instead hold a virtual convention during the original dates in mid-July. Delegates will vote via electronic system, and Joe Biden will become his party’s nominee. He’ll select Amy Kloubchar of Minnesota as his running mate, keeping his promise to select a woman. and the matter will be closed.
Until a couple of weeks pass, that is.
That’s when Biden will step aside due to health reasons, having accomplished his goal of getting the nomination and perhaps as importantly, stopping Bernie Sanders from getting it. Back in 1972, when Thomas Eagleton stepped down post-convention from his spot on the ticket as the vice presidential nominee, George McGovern recommended Sargent Shriver to take his place. The Democratic National Committee…the party poo-bahs…approved the choice, and the ticket went on to the general election…winning only one state.
So the DNC, which has wanted to control this process from the start, despite the black eye it got in 2016 from putting its thumb on the scale for Hillary Clinton, will coax New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to become the nominee. Klobuchar will stand aside, saying the nominee should make the choice. Cuomo, not bound by the Biden-select-a-woman pledge, will be free to select whoever has the hot hand at that point…perhaps Cory Booker of New Jersey.
Too fanciful, you say? Not any more out of the realm of possibility than anything else this election season…or this calendar year.
