Police are investigating after pulling a body from the Des Moines River this weekend. Des Moines Police officers were sent to Prospect Park Saturday afternoon after someone spotted a body in the river. Rescue personnel from the Des Moines Fire Department removed the body from the water with help from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. An autopsy will be performed to identify the body and determine how the person died.

A Waterloo man has been arrested, accused of shooting at a house shortly after midnight early yesterday morning. 27-year-old Trenton Sliekers is charged with intimidation with a weapon, being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of burglary tools, carrying weapons, possession of marijuana and driving while suspended. Residents called police to report six or seven gunshots and a person driving away on a motorcycle; officers found a bullet had struck the front door of a resident in the 200 block of W. Tenth St. No one was injured. Police found a motorcycle a short distance away, and Sliekers was found on the porch of an address in the 1400 block of Commercial St. Officers discovered a .38-caliber revolver in a mailbox nearby, as well as a set of lock picks.

No one was injured when a fire broke out at a two-story home in Cedar Rapids shortly before 11 o’clock yesterday morning. Crews were called to a house at 4600 White Pine Drive NE. There was fire and heavy smoke on the back side of the home and up to the roof. Crews were able to get the fire under control in about 20 minutes. Cause of the fire remains under investigation. No one was home at the time, but damage to the home was significant.

One person died when a truck struck a tree and caught on fire in northeast Iowa. The Clayton County Sheriff’s office says the crash happened south of the town of McGregor, Iowa, around 3:40 p.m. Saturday. The sheriff’s office says the truck failed to negotiate a curve in the road and went into a ditch where it struck the tree and started on fire. The driver of the truck died at the scene of the crash.​

Iowa health officials reported 528 additional coronavirus cases and nine new deaths linked to COVID-19 to give the state a total of 9,169 cases. The Iowa Department of Public Health said Sunday that a total of 184 deaths have been reported in the state. Two of the deaths reported Sunday were in Black Hawk County, one in Bremer County…all three were over age 81. Total deaths in Black Hawk County now total 15…5 in Bremer County.

Whirlpool Amana resumed operations beginning with third shift workers Sunday night, this after working to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 among workers at the plant. Safety measures at the plant include temperature screenings, added cleaning measures, social distancing on production lines and the option for workers to wear masks during the work day.

One person has serious injuries after a shooting in Cedar Rapids. Police received a report of shots fired in the area of Washington Avenue and 3rd Avenue SE just before 3 Saturday afternoon. Officers found the driver of a vehicle had struck a pole…and that the driver had a substantial injury as a result of a gunshot. The driver, a 23-year old male, was transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. Police believe this was a targeted shooting.

Two people died when the motorcycle they were riding veered off the road and ran into a fence. Clinton County sheriff’s officials say it happened around 4:15 p.m. Saturday afternoon. Deputies who responded found that a motorcycle had left the road and struck a farm fence in a field. Both people on the motorcycle died at the scene.
