Inmate shoots Fayette Co. deputy at hospital, kills self

Authorities say a jail inmate committed suicide after grabbing a gun and shooting a sheriff's deputy at a northeast Iowa hospital.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is looking into the shooting, which happened around 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union.

Authorities say the unidentified inmate attacked the Fayette County deputy when one of his hands was released from handcuffs.  A struggle ensued and the inmate was able to grab the deputy's gun.

The deputy used a non-lethal device on the inmate, and the inmate shot the deputy before turning the gun on himself. The deputy was wearing a bulletproof vest and was not seriously hurt.

Hospital CEO Steve Stark says the hospital limited access to some areas on Saturday, but no services were interrupted.
