Kaufert pushing to buy fire truck

The Neenah-Menasha Fire Rescue department is asking the two cities to replace an unreliable ladder truck, and Neenah's mayor hopes the city councils can approve the request quickly.

The current ladder truck has broken down at least four times this year, and the department can get a demo model from Pierce Manufacturing, for under $800,000.

Neenah Mayor Dean Kaufert says the department has $1 million in next year's budget to buy a truck, and it makes a lot of sense to buy it a few months early. He says Neenah and Menasha could also potentially face some liability problems, if the truck broke down on the way to a fire.

Menasha's city council didn't approve its share of the cost of the new truck, earlier this week. Members could take up the issue again, next week.

Neenah's city council will consider it on Monday.
