Group runs protected special needs trusts

Prosecutors say an Appleton man stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from his disabled son's trust fund, and a non-profit gives people an option to avoid similar situations.

WisPACT currently oversees special needs trust funds for about 2,300 people in the state.

Beneficiaries specialist Eric DeGroot says they need a lot of documentation, before they'll write a check. He says they look for red flags, to make sure the money is being spent, appropriately.

Forty-eight-year-old Todd Laseke is facing several felony charges. Court records say he took about $360,000 from his son's trust fund, and he used the money on drugs, pornography, and travel.

His son received $1.4 million from a medical malpractice lawsuit.
