Seatbelt law now 5 yrs old

Five years after the primary seatbelt law went on the books in Wisconsin, seatbelt use is at an all-time high in the state.

The DOT says 83 percent are buckling up, and that's still below the national average of 86 percent.

Capt. Mike Jobe of the Outagamie County sheriff's department says it's clear that the law is working.

The primary enforcement law lets police officers stop a driver, if someone in the car isn't wearing a seatbelt.

The DOT predicts that if the state's rates went up by 10 percent, it would save 44 lives and prevent 650 injuries, every year.

Last year, police wrote over 71,000 seatbelt tickets.
