Official reacts to historic tax credit

The state is putting a popular historic preservation tax credit on hold, because of demand, and a local official hopes lawmakers don't wait too long.

Governor Walker halted the expanded credit, after developers filed paperwork, asking for more than $35 million for various projects. The state budgeted $4 million for the program.

Karen Harkness is Appleton's community development director, and she says it's not impacting any current projects. But she says that the decision could put future projects in limbo.

Harkness says the popularity of the expanded program demonstrates that it is needed. She says she understands why lawmakers took a step back to re-evaluate the situation. She says maybe they could put an annual cap in place.
