Iowa City starts work on elementary school

Crews have begun work on the first new school in Iowa City in more than 20 years.

Officials and students gathered for a ceremonial groundbreaking Tuesday at the 16-acre site of the new school.

The roughly 65,000-square-foot school is scheduled to open in fall 2015.  It will be large enough for 500 students.

Construction costs are estimated at $11.2 million with additional costs for design work and other expenses.

The school will include an 8,000-square-foot gym, which is about twice the size usually found in elementary schools. That's because the city and school district have agreed to make the gym available for public use after school hours.
