Camp lets disabled youth participate in athletics

About 20 people who use wheelchairs are joining for a sports camp in Cedar Falls where they can take part in activities ranging from basketball to rock climbing.

The SportAbility of Iowa Adapted Sports Camp lets participants use specialized wheelchairs and hand cycles that make more activities possible.

The participants, aged 6 to 18, come from across Iowa for the camp continuing through Saturday.

Story City 15-year-old Noah Thomas says he enjoys watching "everyone accomplishing what you first thought you couldn't."

The camp had been in doubt because of the theft last winter of SportAbility's wheelchairs and a trailer in Cedar Rapids. Although the trailer was found and a man arrested, most of the wheelchairs were ruined.

Thanks to donations, the group now has 20 wheelchairs.
