Gaming commission approves Greene County casino

Iowa’s 19th state-licensed casino is coming to Jefferson in Greene County on Highway 30 west of Ames and Boone.

On Thursday morning, the Iowa Racing & Gaming Commission approved a new state gaming license on a 3-2 vote for the proposed $40-million Greene County casino proposal.

The decision came despite two casino marketing studies conducted for the commission earlier this year.  Both studies recommended against any new casino, concluding that the state was saturated with casinos and that any new casino would steal significant business from existing casinos.

The commission’s approval of the Greene County comes on the heels of the commission’s April 17 decision on a 4-1 vote to deny a state gaming license for a $170-million casino along the Cedar River across from downtown Cedar Rapids.

The commission cited its two market studies in denying the Cedar Rapids casino proposal.  Those studies said a Cedar Rapids casino would harm the casino closest to it at Riverside south of Iowa City.
