2 people escape apartment fire

Firefighters were called to a building at 116 15th Street NE just after 1:00 AM Sunday.

Businesses occupied the first floor with two apartments on the second floor.

Upon arrival, firefighters found flames coming from second floor windows.  The fire was contained to one of the two apartments.

Two people were in the building at the time of the fire.  Officials say 34-year-old Lavelle Clarke was asleep and awakened by his roommate, 32-year-old Gary Logan, after the fire started.  Both escaped without injury.

There was heavy damage throughout the building.  The Red Cross is providing assistance to those displaced.  According to a report released by the Cedar Rapids Fire Department, smoke alarms were not working at the time of the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
