Slain boy's family protests possible plea deal

The family of a toddler killed in 2012 is protesting a possible plea deal for a Dubuque man charged in the boy's death.

About 30 family members and supporters held large signs Friday outside the Dubuque County Courthouse protesting any deal for 36-year-old Nicholas Reed.

Last year, prosecutors dropped a first-degree murder charge against Reed in the death of 2-year-old Bentley Randall, saying there was not enough evidence to convict.  A count of child neglect and two drug counts remain against him, but family members say they were recently informed that prosecutors will offer Reed a deal.

Police say the boy had been left in Reed's care when he was brought into a hospital unresponsive and severely burned in November 2012.
