Republicans nominate Blum for US House seat

Dubuque business owner Rod Blum has won the Republican nomination for Iowa's 1st Congressional District.

He emerged from a crowded field of candidates seeking to replace Democratic Rep. Bruce Braley, who is running for U.S. Senate.

The 59-year-old Blum won the Tuesday primary over Cedar Rapids businessman Steve Rathje and Marshalltown attorney Gail Boliver.  He will face the winner of a five-person Democratic primary.

Blum, who unsuccessfully sought the 1st District nomination in 2012, is the chief executive officer of a company that provides engineering software.

Blum has called for balancing the federal budget, reducing taxes and cutting regulations.  He favors a constitutional amendment limiting federal spending and repeal of the Affordable Care Act.
