Murphy wins 5-way Democratic 1st District primary

Longtime Dubuque Rep. Pat Murphy has won the Democratic nomination for northeast Iowa's 1st Congressional District.

Murphy won the nomination over four other candidates in Tuesday's primary election.  He will face the winner of a three-person Republican race.

They're seeking election to a seat held by Democratic Rep. Bruce Braley since 2007.  Braley opted to run for U.S. Senate.

In his campaign, the 54-year-old Murphy has emphasized his 25 years as a legislator and focus on issues he says help the middle class.  Those include efforts to raise the minimum wage and increase funding for education programs.

Murphy says he supports the Affordable Care Act but thinks it could be improved.
