Gambling commission to visit Jefferson casino site

The state gambling commission plans to meet Thursday in Jefferson to visit the site of a proposed new casino, hear a formal presentation and take public comments.

The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission will gather information and consider whether it wants to allow construction of another casino in Iowa.  A decision won't be made until the commission's June 12 meeting.

The proposed project would be a $40 million casino resort with restaurants, a conference center and a hotel on the north edge of Jefferson.  It would create 270 jobs.

The five-member gambling commission denied a license for a larger proposed casino for Cedar Rapids in April, concluding it would take money from existing casinos.

Studies suggest the Jefferson casino also would take money from others but to a lesser degree.
