Marshalltown school district buys 4,200 pedometers

Students in Marshalltown are going to be getting pedometers as part of their physical education classes thanks to a federal grant.

The Marshalltown Community School District bought 4,200 pedometers to encourage students to be more active.

The district's grant administrator Matt Tullis says he hopes the students will find the pedometers interesting.  And Tullis says teachers hope to teach the kids about tools they can use for the rest of their lives.

Younger students in kindergarten through fourth grade will wear the pedometers for four days in a row.  Older students will wear them for an entire week to measure activity.

The district plans to spend $80,000 on the pedometers.
