Two teachers unions may merge

There's a proposal to combine the two largest unions for teachers and other educators.

The Wisconsin Education Association Council and AFT-Wisconsin might merge, under the name Wisconsin Together.

AFT-Wisconsin President Kim Kohlhaas says they've been talking about it for years, but they couldn't get past their differences. She says that changed, after the collective bargaining law took effect.

Kohlhaas says if the merger moves forward, she would be the co-president of the group, along with WEAC President Betsy Kippers, for two or three years. The new union might represent nearly 41,000 people in the first year.

Members of both groups will vote on the merger in April.
