Lack of demand delays area code addition

Plans for another area code in the 920 territory won't be coming for a while.

Public Service Commission spokesman Nathan Conrad says that's because of the slow demand, for new numbers.

Several years ago, the agency announced plans to add a 274 prefix. The move will force people to dial 10 digits to make a local call. Conrad says the timeline was already delayed once.

Conrad says the PSC won't add the 274 area code, until there are fewer than 500,000 920 numbers left. Right now, there are about one million.
