Security workers at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are threatening to go on strike if a contract agreement is not reached this week. While the union represents only a small portion of the overall port workforce, other unionized employees such as longshoremen and clerks will likely not cross picket lines if a work stoppage is in place. U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) President and CEO Dan Halstrom said the LA/Long Beach port complex is highly important for U.S. beef and pork exports.
Halstrom said shipments scheduled to depart through that key Oakland port could also be delayed if congestion worsens in the Southern California ports.
